Mafac
MAFAC (Manufacture Arvernoise de Freins et Accessoires pour Cycles) was a French brake manufacturer based in Clermont-Ferrand, in the Auvergne region. Founded in the post-war years (originally under the name Securite, renamed MAFAC in the autumn of 1947), it became the dominant maker of centre-pull rim brakes, equipping much of the professional peloton as well as countless touring and randonneur bicycles for some three decades. Its 1952 Racer, sold under the slogan Un doigt suffit! (one finger is enough), made reliable one-finger braking possible and was seen throughout the pro peloton, winning multiple editions of the Tour de France. MAFAC also produced the Criterium cantilever favoured on tandems and fully-loaded tourers, aluminium brake levers and rider tool kits. Facing economic pressure and strong Japanese competition, the company disappeared during the 1980s.
