A technical curiosity: a continuously variable transmission (CVT), with no discrete gears. Inside, a friction planetary drive rolls tilting balls between two discs; tilting the balls changes the contact diameters and varies the ratio in a perfectly continuous way, with no jolts and no shift shock. The N380 (NuVinci technology, today sold under the enviolo name) offers a 380% range (ratios 0.5 to 1.9), the sensation of infinite gears and versions with a manual twist grip or automatic/electronic control. Belt compatible, 135 mm hub spacing.
