Cantilever brake that Shimano launched in October 2003 for road levers, under the Multi-Condition Brake System name. It targets cyclocross bikes on wide tyres and flat-bar bikes, with a cartridge shoe holder and a unit link available in several lengths. Shimano recommends the road levers ST-5600, ST-4500, ST-3400, ST-R500, BL-R600, BL-R440, BL-R550 or BL-R770 and states that it cannot be combined with V-brake levers: it therefore works on short pull. Despite the neighbouring part number, it has nothing in common with the BR-R353, BR-R463 and BR-R573 V-brakes, which run on long pull.
