The DU-EP800 is the original drive unit of the EP8 system, introduced by Shimano in 2020 to succeed the STEPS E8000 as a high-end e-MTB mid-drive motor (not to be confused with the later DU-EP801). It raises maximum torque to 85 Nm while cutting weight to around 2.6 kg thanks to a magnesium housing, against 2.9 kg for the E8000. Its torque sensor drives three assistance modes (Eco, Trail, Boost), with a support ratio reaching about 400% and a cut-off at 25 km/h for a nominal 250 W. It works with the STEPS BT-E8035 and BT-E8036 batteries, offers walk assist and receives firmware updates via E-TUBE.
