SunTour's patented Bar-Con was the definitive bar-end shifter of its era and near-universal fit on 1980s cyclocross bikes. Its Power Ratchet spring-and-pawl mechanism decoupled the friction from the lever: the lever could be pushed against the derailleur spring almost without effort, while the ratchet and lever friction held the chosen gear in place. Introduced in the mid-1970s and produced well into the mid-1980s, this retro-friction rear lever was compatible with 5-, 6-, 7- and 8-speed freewheels before being superseded by the lighter-action LD-4850 Power Shifters.
