The RWS (Ratchet Wheel-mounting System) solved the thru-axle most annoying compromise: with a normal lever you either over-tighten or end up with the lever pointing the wrong way. RWS uses fine ratchet toothing inside the lever, so you torque the axle fully home and then flip the lever to any position without loosening it. The payoff is up to 50 percent more clamping force than a quick release, in a light alloy axle-and-lever package.
